Classical and semirelativistic magnetohydrodynamics with anisotropic ion pressure

چکیده
We study the magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) equations with anisotropic ion pressure and isotropic electron pressure under both the classical and semirelativistic approximations in order to develop a numerical model. The dispersion relation as well as the characteristic wave speeds are derived. In addition to the exact wave speed solutions, we also provide efficient approximate formulas for the semirelativistic magnetosonic speeds. The equations are discretized with the Rusanov and Harten-Lax-van Leer numerical schemes and implemented into the BATS-R-US MHD code. We perform a set of verification tests. 2012 Elsevier Inc. Pressure anisotropy in global magnetospheric simulations: A magnetohydrodynamics model
[1] In order to better describe the space plasmas where pressure anisotropy has prominent effects, we extend the BATS-R-US magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) model to include anisotropic pressure. We implement the anisotropic MHD equations under the double adiabatic approximation with an additional pressure relaxation term into BATS-R-US and perform global magnetospheric simulations. The results from i...
متن کاملTwo New Non-AFR Criteria for Depicting Strength Differential Effect (SDE) in Anisotropic Sheet Metals
The issue of pressure sensitivity of anisotropic sheet metals is investigated with introducing two new non-AFR criteria which are called here linear and non-Linear pressure sensitive criteria. The yield and plastic potential functions of these criteria are calibrated with directional tensile/compressive yield stresses and directional tensile Lankford coefficients, respectively. To determine unk...
متن کاملSymmetries, conservation laws and exact solutions of static plasma equilibrium systems in three dimensions
For static reductions of isotropic and anisotropic Magnetohydrodynamics plasma equilibrium models, a complete classification of admitted point symmetries and conservation laws is presented. It is shown that the symmetry algebra for the isotropic equations is finite-dimensional, whereas anisotropic equations admit infinite symmetries depending on a free function defined on the set of magnetic su...
متن کاملAnisotropic Diffusion in a Toroidal Geometry
As part of the Department of Energy’s applications oriented SciDAC project, three model problems have been proposed by the Center for Extended Magnetohydrodynamics Modeling to test the potential of numerical algorithms for challenging magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) problems that are required for future fusion development. The first of these, anisotropic diffusion in a toroidal geometry, is consider...
متن کاملFluid simulations of non-resonant anisotropic ion heating
The finite Larmor radius (FLR)-Landau fluid model, which extends the usual anisotropic magnetohydrodynamics to magnetized collisionless plasmas by retaining linear Landau damping and finite Larmor radius corrections down to the sub-ionic scales in the quasi-transverse directions, is used to study the non-resonant heating of the plasma by randomly driven Alfvén waves. One-dimensional numerical s...
